Saw a Red Cobalt SS coupe on Romence today on my way to get gas before going into work early. I'm not sure how new it was, but it had a can on it, and the larger rear spoiler, and some white vinyl decal in the rear window.

I spotted him as I was turning left onto Romence from Portage Rd, while he was waiting to go straight. He must have heard me as I had the cutouts open today (who can't with them capped anyways). I got stopped at the light at Lover's when I saw him coming up in the rear view. Light turned green and I was already going around 35mph when he tried to floor it by me. I laid into it, but didn't get the 1st gear downshift, just the second gear catch up BS. Not sure if it was tuned or not, but it belted out a nice black cloud around 50mph while he was a car length ahead of me. After my car made it to 3rd gear, I had put two cars on him at 80mph and figured that was enough for Romence.

Anyone know him? Blonde man at least in his mid 20s.

Dont know who it is, but those Cobalts run fat. I chased one outta the Mendon car show about 2 years ago and is was belching black smoke too.

Nice kill though.

Did you see what wheels it had?

The Supercharged SS has a polished chrome wheel, as where the Turbo version has an 8 spoke aluminum wheel.

It might be a kid I went to school with, recently got a red turbo cobalt. He said it's got a tune and some bov spring mod thing. It seemed to pull ok when I drove it a few weeks back.

Can't remember what rims it had on it. Couldn't really hear whether it was a turbo or S/C as even my normal exhaust drowns out most things from other cars. The Cutouts just get ridiculous smile.gif

If he's got the tune, depending on where it came from will bump it up to around 300 whp... but the spring upgrade in pointless. It's got a bypass valve not a BOV.

I would have to doubt it had 300whp. My car isn't that fast, and I'd imagine from a roll with 300whp he'd would have walked me decently..

The newer Turbo version responds pretty well to a tune. Here's a post from Xceed:

And after Livernois street tune.

There are plenty of videos of this tuned Cobalt running people down pretty well from a roll. Just check out the vids posted by Shocker187 on Xceed.

at about 29 seconds into the video... LOL

I didn't know the new ones came with a turbo... I don't know what they were thinking with the first gen, they should have been turbos from the beginning...

Nice cars, and Nice Kill!

Funny how I hardly ever see Cobalt SS's on the street, but when I went to the GVSU car show a couple of weeks ago there was about 10 of them, and not even one SRT-4. Weird. So, I put my car in there to try to represent. Bug guts and all. LOL So, IMO it's rare to see them, and rarer to see one being run hard.
I wonder if thier production numbers are anywhere near what the SRT-4's were.

I'd like to run against a turbo one sometime.

That's why I love driving my SS turbo, I de-badged it to so it's hard to tell it's even an SS unless you look real close. People are always F'n with me on the street cuz they think it's just a stock cobalt lowered. But they find out real quick that it's not....smile.gif

They're definitely wrong wheel drive, but still a good base to work from if that's what you've got to work with.

Wrong wheel drive agreed, but they get me to work and back and are fast enough to have fun with. They are simple and economical.

It will never be able to drift, and drag racing is less than fully satisfying when I know I'm unable to use the power that I have no matter what I do, but I can do it (drag or autocross) and the car is surprisingly quick for what it is and for any daily driven street car for that matter.

Biggest drawback is the inability to kick the ass out exiting a corner. Really not that big a deal to me 99% of the time, and the lack of throttle steer is countered by economy and the fact that fwd goes great in the snow. Not a bad trade IMO.

If I wanted a superior drag or road race platform only, then I would not have fwd, but for everyday driving, it's perfectly adequate, and for economy, better than anything else except rear engine, rear drive which are usually maintenance headaches.
