I think i have the correct idea on how to paint wheels. Sand, Primer, Paint. Just wonderd if anyone had any tips. Any recomended paints. Or anything.

All help will be greatfully appreciated.

to paint aluminum wheels i did this:

first SAND the surface or else nothing will stick. i think i just used 400 grit.

second use ETCHING PRIMER or else it will flake off. do several light coats to help aid in adhesion.

third i used DUPLICOLOR ENGINE ENAMEL but they also make a wheel paint, POS pep boys just didn't have it. basically, use a paint that's going to be durable.

last use CLEARCOAT so it doesn't chip easily.

i did all that and didn't get one chip for 3 years... not bad. the last set i just sanded and then had my friend powder coat them though - doesn't look any better, but that stuff's invincible.

degrease the rims realy good befor painting so the paint will not lift off the rim my dad painted mine 3 years ago and still look good. powder coating your rims makes the lip biger so it makes it really hard to get tires on and off. and I would not use any lower then a 400grit or you will see scratches

Fuck Paint, just have them powdercoated..

Where would you have them powdercoated?

my dads friend does powder coating on the side. he does an awesome job, and he only charged me $40 for all four rims. but then again he gives me a discount unsure.gif

from my experience, if by chance they are alloy: sandblast, powrder coat. period. sandblasting gives it a great clean surface to paint. and powrdercoat as mentioned before is nearly impossible to chip and all this can be done for roughly $50/rim if you go to the right places.

i just did mine a couple of months ago. I sand blasted, sanded with fine grit, used alchohol to get rid of any grime that would have been on them, then used duplicolor wheel paint. Duplicolor wheel paint is the shit if you are going to be painting them.

old thread...but i've painted mine twice now.

I did a huge write up on this a few years ago when i did it on my gsr for team-integra.net. All you need to do is prep the rim by cleaning it of all debris, sand it. Then use the DUPLICOLOR Wheel Paint you can find at Autozone. NO need to use a primer, cuz its built into the paint. And then i used a clear coat for extra protection. But if you dont want the shine you dont have to use it.

I wish i still had pix of those rims but they were FLAWLESS. I remember pulling up to the SOS meet and people asking me what kinda rims they were, or how much they cost. haha Countless times people wanted to know if where i got 'em... but were suprised to hear they were just stockies painted. So yeah... just use the wheel paint. put about 3 coats on it and your good.

how many of y'all have seen my wheels? Looks haflway decent.....not bad for $.98 a can indoor/outdoor spray paint from meijers. best part is, if it gets chipped or anything else, it's cheap as shit to fix. hell, before I painted my calipers, I wouldn't even take em off the car to touch em up. Best part is, brake dust actually makes em look better!

Yeah....there's a really big hole in the ozone layer right above my house thanks to all the spray paint we use around here....
