Full Version: 2.5" Muffler Welded Into A 3" Catback?

I'm currently running a MAC Stainless 2.5" catback that I like the sound of, but don't like how it fits or is put together. It rests against a couple of IRS parts and vibrates, etc. I've taken it off and put it back on, adjusted it, taken it somewhere and adjusted it some more, but it's just the way the MAC CB is.

I've got a Stainless 3" CB at home that I was going to sell (it was waay too loud for my setup and didn't sound good), but I was wondering if I could have someone cut/weld my 2.5" mufflers into the 3" system, which fit perfectly. I'm fairly sure they have similar offsets.

I could buy 3" mufflers separately, but would prefer not to shell out the $$ at the moment.

Pro's/Con's of doing this? Any place you'd recommend doing it that would have the 3" Stainless piping on hand to make it fit?

Thanks

3" to 2.5" reducer.

I've got a 125 amp GMAW, but I don't think you want me anywhere near your polished stainless. Haha. That, and you'd have to buy wire for stainless, as I'm setup for mild steel at the moment.

Why not sell your current 2.5 Mac CB and use that money to buy the 3" Mac mufflers??

I'm sure you can get rid of it pretty quick from what I've seen on SVTP and other Mustang forums. It's a hot setup.

Why would you change what is already awesome? Your car's sound is great. I wouldn't change a thing. Sell the other one.

bassani.........the only way to go.

I'm personally stuck between Bassani, SLP and MAC. I've heard them all and it's a tough decision, but I can see why he would want to stay with MAC....it sounds amazing.

2.5" mufflers on 3" piping;

possible; yes
retarded; absolutely

i'm willing to bet that with that bottle neck it will probably end up sounded worse.

save up for a full 3" or larger set-up. Hell, i'm looking at 3" for my puny 4cyl...

Bottlenecks in the exhaust essentially make the exhaust whatever size the bottleneck is. On my car, I have a 3" o2 housing to a 3" dp which connects to a catback using a header connection 3" to 2.5" reducer. Might want to look into getting a pair of header connections if you don't want the muffler to be permanently welded into the exhaust in case you changed your mind and for resale; people would bitch and I think you'd have a hard time getting rid of it for a respectable price.

Prob I ran into, impossible to find stainless headers around here. Found some on the net for $40 a piece. Went cheap, got regular for $14 a pair. I just spray painted it with high temp paint and called it a day; just depends how close the muffler is to your motor.

I'd go with Greddy

Up until now, MAC didn't make a Stainless Steel 3" setup. The 3" system they sell isn't SS.

I'm not trying to change the overall sound at all, which I like. What I don't like is the way it vibrates (its 3 pieces) or overall fit/finish that the MAC system has. The 3" system I have as a spare fit perfect, was one piece, but didn't sound right.

I'll see if I can get a 3" muffler from MAC and go that route.

2.25 headers, 4 inch collectors, 3.5 inch exhaust
