i have a guy that wants my bike and has an AE86 and cash...
carb'd and rwd are making me think it would be terrible in the winter (pretty much the only time i'll use the car), but would it get around with some snow tires?
anybody know of any issues with these cars?
i'm guessing it's good on gas and would run like a tank; but just wondered if anyone had any knowledge of these beasts...

it's an 86, don't think it's a GTS, has a 'carb'd sr-r'
http://www.flickr.com/photos/30425462@N02/...57617456782024/i guess he's asking $750 for it if anybody is interested, he's on xceedspeed..

definitely not the more wanted model.
you could drive it in the winter. i used to drive my starlet in the winter and that was carb'd. its not as bad as everyone makes it seem when you are just running a factory carb.
it has drums and an open diff and a pretty anemic engine.

well im not Rolla expert but it looks pretty sweet to me. SR5, packing a 4A-C (SOHC Carb'd) with 90 hp. not gonna surprise anyone in the speed department, but they're built to handle. It's begging for a 4A-GE or 22R-E swap. it'd totally get it if everything runs fine and i had the room for it. IMO the carb'd engines dont do that bad in the winter to warrant not getting one. id much rather drive RWD in the winter than FWD. quite honestly my Prelude scared the shit out of me and i'll never do it again

unfortunately, ppl STILL drift these. being not very aggressive near its limits and having good handling has made it popular for beginners for years. plus its sweet looking and a little slice of history. its not much different than asking why a 67 Camaro is a sweet car just cause ppl dragged and circuit raced them once upon a time.

It's a piece of shit car with a solid rear axle.
I thought about buying that. But, highway trips in the snow without snow tires? Just to let you know, they suck dick. Your rear end gets squirrelly with EVERY..SINGLE..LITTLE...ICEPATCH.
Food for thought.

i had one of those almost exactly like that (white 86 sr5 coupe) as my first car back in '96. i would not recommend it for what you are looking to do with it.

you do realize you just pointed out a huge number of rear wheel drive cars right?
for some reason i'm going to go ahead and say 1st gen. RX7's are not huge pieces of shit. for some reason people keep racing those "pieces of shit".
if you like it get it. its a old corolla, not a sports car.

Nate, to beat around in, provided that it runs well, it will do fine. The thing that worries me is the level of corrosion that this car has. The car, once brought back up to proper mechanical spec will last a long, long time. Even with all the rust.
So, as stated above, if you like it, get it.

Jun 8 2009, 09:35 PM
Buy that only if you are planning to strip it to the shell and create a race car with a brand new powertrain and all, otherwise don't even bother, that car is too far gone and too old for it to ever be nice.

honestly i dont even think they look good... i think there ugly ass POS cars that are way over rated because someone, or a couple people drifted well in them because of there horrible handling ability causing them to not keep traction with there measly 32hp engines...
im just trying to speak truth here...
but maybe this is the same reason i get aggravated when someone tries to sell a 3000gt or stealth as a "rare car" when its the base model that you see at least one of a week...

you guys do realize you have to actually make an effort to pretty much get any car sideways.
its not like the fucking corvair of toyota. I'm amazed that you guys know so little about the cars of the past....
you can drive anything in the winter no problem, as long as you don't drive like a moron. you don't even need snow tires; they just make it easier.

all i want is something that is going to get around in the snow, has heat, and is able to haul around atleast SOME shit... this looks like a decent candidate, but i think i'll keep looking around for an EG...
he is throwing in $900, so it's a pretty damn good trade if the thing runs decent...

what i'm looking for in a car:
runs
drives
clutch doesn't slip
brakes are decent
tires are decent
not ear-bleeding loud
decent gas mileage (~30mpg)
cheap to insure (ie. air bags

)
4wd/awd (not a deal breaker)

You sound kinda like you're looking for the same thing as I. I was thinking more like late 80's Ford Ranger, 2.3L, 4x4. I found one for 800 in Fort Wayne with a decent body. About 25-28 on gas, good in snow, and fun to beat on. Cheap parts too. You would just have no chance of picking up some winter tail in it!

Hey, I am on the site. Just mostly lurk though and don't post. Yeh, I will probably sell my car soon, but need to get another vehicle first. And I was going to try and get 3k out of it when I do sell it. Also, I don't want to sell it to somebody I know. The thing seems to have a problem like every other week. I really don't know where the "foreign cars are more reliable than domestic" thing came from.
Oh and Jordan, the last name is Westendorp, not westendorf.
