ALBANY, Ore. - At the Oaks Apartments in Albany, the management can fly their own flag advertising one and two bedroom apartments - but residents have been told they can't fly any flags at all.

Jim Clausen flies the American flag from the back of his motorcycle. He has a son in the military heading back to Iraq, and the flag - he said - is his way of showing support.

"This flag stands for all those people," said Clausen, an Oaks Apartment resident. "It stands for the people that can no longer stand - who died in wars. That's why I fly this flag."

But to Oaks Apartment management, Clausen said, the American flag symbolizes problems.

He was told to remove the red, white and blue from both of his rides, or face eviction.

"It floored me," he said. "I can't believe she was saying what she was saying."

Even long-time residents like Sharron White, who has flown a flag on her car for eight years, has been told to take it down.

White said management told her that "someone might get offended."

"I just said to her 'They'll just have to get over it,'" White said.

OK, I have heard a few too many cases of this BULLSHIT. If you are from another country and coming to the United States of America, you had BETTER not get your panties in a bunch if your neighbor flies the flag of this country. You know they wouldn't have a problem flying THEIR flag next to any Americans that may get offended. FUCK THAT, I think we need to start a movement. If someone is offended because people are flying the colors of this country, they should be deported. Call it extreme but what they are doing is extreme. Fight fire with fire I say.

Damn this kind of news bothers me. (Going to buy another Flag RIGHT NOW)

He should remove all of his flags.

and replace them with:

"DON'T TREAD ON ME"

In all seriousness though, this crosses the line. I don't care about flag burning, that's their right to freedom of expression, but a landlord RESTRICTING an apartment-keeper on what flags he can display publicly? Even on his VEHICLE? That's fucking ridiculous.

I agree totally. The big kicker for me is that the landlord said that about the vehicle, not the apartment. I mean, while ridiculous, I could see the landlord limiting that from the apartment/building because they own it, but the vehicle, thats way over the line.

lemme guess...the landlords are towel-heads...

i was expecting the flag to be associated with the apartment directly, so i'd figure some technicality in the contract made them not have it; say, screwed the flagpole into the porch or something like that. but its a personal vehicle for one, and secondly, its our country! if this situation was in say, the middle east, then i could understand how people might get offended.

if you cant fly your country's own flag on its own ground, damn. i mean i dont want to sound redneck but if people are offended by america/american flag then why are they here?

sounds like a neighbor complained so they apartment managers have to take care of it.

I wish I was an apartment manager and had someone complain to me like that. OOOOOO buddy. That would be a much more interesting news story. lol

Civil suit FTW! Or, just stand on your porch with your legally registered .45 on your hip, and a 12 gauge over your shoulder when they come to enforce their "rule". That might make them understand your position on the matter.
