so i figured i'd finally upgrade from my family's old HUGE 27" tv (not even a flat screen) to something a bit slimmer and way better for my room in my house on campus when i get back. the monster depth and size of the old tv was fine in my dorm where there was a big shelf that was set into the wall, so it didnt take up any usuable room anyways, but now i need something that can fit on a desk or possibly wall mount to save space in the room. depth is the big issue rather than width, so upgrading from a 27 is not a big deal.

i'm not very technology savvy, so 720p/ 1080p lcd/ plasma and what not don't mean much to me although i do know that 1080 is better than 720. I would rather spend more money now than to want to upgrade in a year or two. i was hoping for something like a 42" probably 1080p that mainly is a good deal to watch movies on and hook up to my laptop (porn on a big screen is always fun) and possibly play xbox 360 on.

i have looked a bit online (best buy, amazon, walmart) but not too much... found this which is a decent bit more than i was hoping to pay (~$500 for just tv) but i do need a new dvd player as well and a sound system would be nice. that tv itself was only about 100 cheaper on its own.

anyways, if you guys could post up any advice or any deals you happen to stumble across that would be awesome. looking to spend around $500 or less preferably on about a 42". thanks!

I've always heard of good deals coming out of Sears. My parents picked up their 50" 1080p there a few months back for $900.

I'm assuming/hoping you went and looked for one today? There probably won't be a bigger price drop for a while compared to the deals that were going on today.

i'm living in australia until dec 18 so it makes it a little more difficult, although i was hoping for a good deal cus when it struck 5 am at home it was like late afternoon here so i was hoping to get first dibs on a good deal without even waking up early...although i was hindered by my fairly highly intoxicated state and gave up when i didnt find anything amazing

the only real difference i'm seeing between the 1080p's are the Hz... i've seen 80, 120 and 240 i believe... i'm mainly looking at Vizio as their reviews are good, although i'm getting scared how random people that say they love it but with random sports or action movies that there is a little bit of a blur.. is this due to the Hz level?

Are you friends with my little brother on Facebook? He works in home theater at Best Buy now. Send him a message if you want and he will be able to tell you anything you want to know about TV's and he can let you know when they are having a good deal. From what he tells me don't get a Vizio. You could buy an Insignia, which is Best Buy's house brand (made by Samsung), For the same price and or cheaper, and it's a much better TV.

I'll definitely vouch for Insignia. I bought a 27" 720p back in '06 to fulfill the HD needs of the 360 for $500, when most of the other namebrands of similar size were going for $600-700. It's never skipped a beat and still looks as good as the first day it was turned on and it's seen a lot of use over the years (it's currently serving as my computer monitor)

yeah i got an insignia blu ray player and it works great. no complaints.

fyi: it wouldn't be a bad idea to take advantage of Walmart's lax return policies... aka; but a vizio, keep the box, return several months later and get a full refund laugh.gif

my buddy at school has done this about 3 times, now he just keeps the box by the TV incase he needs some cash for the weekend, hahah
